Making And Using Your Own Turmeric Body Scrub

by Mario Medina

Turmeric is a spice with a long history of use both in food preparation and in medicine. It is thought to help reduce swelling and pain, mostly due to its inclusion of the substance curcumin. There are many therapeutic products made with turmeric, including turmeric body and face scrubs. These pre-made products generally work well, but if you'd rather make your own turmeric scrub, that is also an option. Here are some instructions for making and using such a scrub.

Making Your Turmeric Body Scrub

This recipe makes about a cup of turmeric body scrub, which should be enough for you to use about 10 times. You'll need:

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons ground turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon citric acid
  • 10 drops almond oil
  • 10 drops lavender oil

If you don't have coconut oil on hand, you can instead use olive oil. Your scrub will just have a looser texture. Also, make sure the turmeric you use in this recipe is relatively fresh. You're better off buying it from a spice shop that grinds its own spices than from a typical grocery store.

Place all of the ingredients together in a bowl, and stir to combine. Transfer the mixture to a jar. It should keep for a year or so at room temperature, since the citric acid acts as a preservative.

Using Your Turmeric Scrub

You can use this scrub all over your body in order to manage a number of ailments. It's good at alleviating body acne, since it both decreases inflammation and helps fight the bacteria that cause acne. It is also great at reducing muscle aches and pains, such as those that you develop after a long session in the gym. To use the scrub, simply take about a tablespoon of it into your hand and apply it to moist skin, rubbing in a circular motion. When the scrub is evenly distributed, take another tablespoon and keep doing the same thing until you've treated your whole body.

Some people also like to use turmeric scrub on their faces. If you do this, just keep in mind that it can leave a slight yellowish tint behind. As such, you may want to use the scrub on days you're not going to work or to a special event. You should only need about a teaspoon applied to a moist face. It can help fight acne blemishes and other irritation.

Turmeric scrub is a useful product to keep on-hand. Make yourself a batch, and start enjoying the benefits. To learn more about turmeric body scrubs, contact a company like Mother of Jupiter L.L.C.
