Tackle Aging with Your Own DIY Blend

by Mario Medina

American women are vulnerable to the concept of aging. Each year, thousands of dollars are spent on products claiming to firm skin, erase wrinkles, and make faces appear ten years younger. In fact, the anti-aging market is an over 250 billion dollar industry. A majority of those "miracle" products are full of chemicals and often end up damaging the skin with long term use. However, many of the top skin care lines offer organic facial skin care products. While organic skin care products are made with more natural substances, they can sometimes be outside of a consumer's budget. If an organic skin care product is not feasible for your budget, why not tackle aging using your own homemade anti-aging product? Make this six-ingredient natural DIY blend to keep your skin looking hydrated and youthful!

The Blend

This homemade anti-aging blend uses a combination of essential oils, vitamin E, and a carrier oil. It should be noted that no matter what essential oil you're using, it should always be diluted with a carrier oil before being applied to the skin.

For this particular recipe, combine 5–10 drops of each essential oil, 5 drops of vitamin E oil and 3 tablespoons of the carrier oil.

  • Frankincense and Myrrh: These biblical essential oils provide many nourishing benefits and make the skin look more youthful. Both are anti-inflammatory, which can help even out the redness and uneven skin tones that occurs as skin matures. They are also both antiseptic which decreases the number of breakouts that can come with aging. Some women experience the same hormonal rollercoaster that happens during puberty when they reach middle age, so these oils work together to combat acne. Frankincense alone works to soften wrinkles and minimize age spots. Myrrh is a natural astringent that is great for toning skin and evening out the oily and dry patches.
  • Lavender: Lavender is a diverse oil in that can be used for all skin types and has a broad range of uses and benefits. It has a natural soothing property that makes it safe for sensitive skin types. It is antifungal and antimicrobial which helps fight infection.
  • Rosehip: A powerful essential oil for battling wrinkles and fine lines. It is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and Beta carotene which can naturally repair damaged skin, smooth out wrinkles, and fight blemishes.
  • Vitamin E You can add vitamin E to the blend by purchasing it in liquid or capsule form. If using capsule, poke a hole in the capsule and add just the liquid inside to the blend. Vitamin E blocks free radicals that cause damage to the body and is high in antioxidants, which is why it's used in so many commercial anti-aging products. In addition, vitamin E helps bind moisture to the skin and hydrated skin is younger looking skin!
  • Jojoba Oil: Any carrier oil will work in this DIY blend, but jojoba oil in particular targets anti-aging. It promotes new cell growth which results in the glowing, youthful looking face that you are trying to achieve. It is extremely gentle, making it ideal for mature, more sensitive skin. Jojoba oil is also great for using alone as a makeup remover.

If you do not have jojoba oil on hand, sweet almond, grapeseed, or olive oil work well with the blend, too.

A quick note on purchasing oils

Organic may not always be better when purchasing essential oils. Research the brand prior to using it on your skin; 100% pure oils that are pesticide- and additive-free are the ones that you want to use topically. Organic brands are typically more expensive and not necessary. The important thing is to always read the labels prior to use.

Growing older is inevitable, but that doesn't mean less beautiful skin. Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on anti-aging products that may actually have the adverse effect due to the additives within them, make organic facial skin care yourself. You'll be happy with the results, know exactly what you're putting on your face and save a ton of money overall!
